Javelina Jundred 2009 - Final Update
Here we are at race week! Temperatures for this weekend are forecast in the upper seventies in the day and mid-fifties at night. I have gone over most everything in previous updates (which are also archived on our website homepage), so I will keep this one short with a simple reminder of this weekend's schedule. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call or email me day or night.
Race directions - http://www.maricopa.gov/parks/mcdowell/Directions.aspx
From central Phoenix, take Loop 202 east to Beeline Highway (SR 87). Continue northeast on SR 87 to Shea Blvd. Travel west on Shea Blvd. to Saguaro Blvd.; turn north. Continue through Town of Fountain Hills to Fountain Hills Blvd; turn right and travel four miles to the McDowell Mountain Regional Park entrance. The park entrance fee for one vehicle is included for each runner (they will have a list of all entrants). Once in the park, follow the main road for 3 miles and turn right on Shallmo Dr. just past the visitor's center to the Pemberton Trailhead.
Packet Pickup - When you pick up your race packet you will be asked to sign a waiver and appearance release. (We have two film crews that will be at the race this year.) There will also be a quick medical check with Kachina Rescue.
Race Timing - We will be timing the race using AMB transponders. You will receive your chip attached to an ankle strap at check-in (it will be in your race bag). You MUST wear this chip for the duration of the race. Please return your transponder to the timing tent if you drop from the race or after you finish. These chips cost $85 each to be replaced, so don't make us track you down!

Javelina Jundred 2009 - 2 Week Update
Now less that two weeks away, here are a few more important things to know about this year's race. This message will be archived on the news page of our website for future reference. Please call or email if you have any questions or concerns!
Webcast - We will have live updates for this year's race posted to our website and updated every 5 minutes. Look for a link on our homepage next week. Thanks to Dave Combs (Ultra list moderator and 7 year Javelina Jundred Volunteer) for creating this feature!
Crew / Pacer Park Entry Fee - We have included a parking pass for each entrant this year (your name will be at the front gate), but crews & pacers will still be asked to pay a $6/vehicle/day park entry fee as they enter the park. Please have this available in cash to avoid any delays! Thanks to Stephen Ochoa (Pancho Villa from last year's race) for this reminder.
Volunteers for Study on Hyponatremia - Tamara Hew DPM, PhD from Arizona State University will be conducting a study on hyponatremia (low blood sodium) at this year's race. She was at the Western States Endurance Run this summer conducting the same study and would like to obtain more data. The study would require four small blood samples (1 pre, 2 during, 1 post race), urine samples, sweat collection, and weigh in's on a digital scale after each loop. Her team is experienced and efficient, so it shouldn't adversely affect your race. Participation in the study will help the ultra endurance running community at large by determining how much salt is lost and how much needs to be replaced in order to prevent the development of life-threatening hyponatremia. Full details are at the conclusion of this email. Please email me if you would like to participate.
Daylight Savings - Daylight savings does end on November 1st, but Arizona's clock does not change! I have no idea if this will affect your travel plans home, but just a general FYI to keep in mind.
Foot Taping Update - Kachina Rescue will begin taping feet at 4:15am on race morning. They will offer this on a first come first serve (There is no longer a need to sign up). If you have specific taping materials you would like used, bring them along. Otherwise they will be using Kinesio Tex tape with Mueller Skin adhesive exclusively.
Medical Needs - If anyone has special medical needs, you should notify Alan at Kachina Rescue by email or in person (they will be there around noon on Friday). Alan's email: aromania©kachinarescue.com
Vegetarian Options - We will have veggie subs, vegetarian potato soup at Javelina Jeadquarters, and veggie burgers throughout the night.
Ride Sharing - Several runners are looking to share rides to and from the airport. Please see the following thread on our forum to coordinate with other participants: Ride Share Forum
Pacers - We also have a pacer forum if you are looking for a pacer: Pacer Connection
Jalloween - Don't forget to ask your crews to bring candy for all of the kids of runners who will be trick-or-treating around Javelina Jeadquarters from 6-8pm. (This will make me look really good in their eyes!)
I will be sending out one last email next week with final information, directions, and updates.
A huge thanks to this year's sponsors: The North Face, GU Energy, ZombieRunner, McDowell Mountain Regional Park, Succeed Sportsdrinks, Raw Indulgence, Maricopa County Emergency Communications Group, and Kachina Rescue.
Additional study information below: (Females welcome if they don't mind the urine sample part)
Sodium Balance in Male Runners Participating in a 160 km Footrace
This study, lead by Tamara Hew DPM, PhD from Arizona State University, aims to determine if salt losses in Javelina Jundred runners are significant enough to require sodium supplementation during the race to prevent life-threatening hyponatremia (low blood sodium). This study will investigate if salt losses in sweat and urine are regulated by the body to maintain blood sodium levels within normal levels during prolonged and extreme endurance exercise. By measuring both salt input and salt output during the Javelina Jundred, we can determine overall sodium balance in male runners and calculate just how much salt is necessary (or not!) to maintain blood sodium levels within the normal physiological range. We would like to recruit 20 male runners for this study mainly for ease of urine collection during the race.
The study will be conducted during the race. Before the race, we will collect a baseline blood sample (1 teaspoon) from an arm vein for measurement of electrolytes, plasma volume and arginine vasopressin – the body’s main anti-diuretic hormone. We will also be measuring body mass on a digital scale pre-race and after completion of each ~15 mile loop. During the race, we will ask each subject to pee in a bottle located every five miles (checkpoints are every five miles) if and only when necessary. We will measure salt output in sweat using a forearm patch, changed every ~15 miles (per loop). Five mL (1 teaspoon) of blood will be taken upon completion of every second loop (~30 miles) during the race and at race finish to assess electrolytes, plasma volume and arginine vasopressin levels. We will be taking an inventory of all food and fluid intake to estimate salt intake during your run.
Participation is voluntary and each subject is free to withdraw from the study at any time. The risks associated with participation in this trial do not exceed the risks normally associated with participating in the Javelina Jundred Mile Race. A total of four needle sticks to obtain a total of 20 mL (four teaspoons) of blood will be performed during the course of the investigation. The risks of blood draw may include: infection, delayed healing, bruising, physical discomfort, mental discomfort, and injury to a nerve or vessel. These risks will be minimized by the use of trained phlebotomists, sterile technique and single use, disposable, materials. Your participation will help the ultra endurance running community at large by determining how much salt is lost and how much need to be replaced in order to prevent the development of life-threatening hyponatremia in athletes participating in 100 mile races such as the Javelina Jundred.

Monday 31 August 2009
Welcome 2009 Javelina Jundred Runners
Runners,
This will be the first of several updates leading up to this year's Jalloween party and 100 mile run! We have several exciting additions to this year's race that should make it the best yet. If you haven't been to our website recently, be aware that registration closed as of August 5th. We are keeping a wait list if any spots open up, but plan to cap all registrations at 225 in anticipation of 200 starters on race day.
12 Hour Night Run - We are once again hosting a 12 hour full moon night run on the Javelina course. The run will start at 6pm on Saturday, September 5th. You will be expected to carry enough food and water to make it around each 15.4 mile loop (no support on the course). This no fee, no aid, no whining run allows you to see the Pemberton Trail at night under the full moon. Anyone is welcome, so feel free to invite friends, family, pacers, or whoever wants to run. So far we have 50 people signed up! For more details and to sign up, see the 12 Hour tab to the left.
Full Refund Ends August 30th - If for some reason you will not be able to
make it to the race this year, please let me know by August 30th if you would
still like to receive a full refund of your entry fee.
Costume Contest - Our annual costume contest will be back again this year! A unique award and complimentary entry into the 2010 Javelina Jundred will be awarded to the best male and best female costumes. Winners will be selected by the race committee.
Jalloween Trick or Treat - Since this year's race falls directly on Jalloween, we are proud to be offering some activities for kids. Here is a schedule of what is in store:
3pm: Halloween Games & Activities
This year for the children of runners and crew members, we will have games and activities for them to participate in such as: pumpkin carving, cookie decorating, dress-up relay and more.
6:30 - 8pm: Haunted House & Trick or Treating
Beginning at 6:30 p.m., kids can trick or treat crews and the aid station. Crews, please plan on bringing some treats to share for the kids who might be there. A haunted house will also be open at Javelina Jeadquarters!
Camping - We have a lot of runners signed up for camping this year. We will have designated camping areas at Javelina Jeadquarters available on a first come, first serve basis.
For those runners who have signed up to camp in a large RV, we unfortunately will not be able to acccomodate you in our main parking area. We ask that if you would still like to bring an RV, you use the developed sites located within the park, 1 1/2 miles from the starting line. These sites feature electrical/water hookups, dump station, restrooms, picnic tables, and grills. These spaces are available for $20/night, payable at the park.
Race Packet Pickup - We will have your race packets available Friday night,
October 30th from 4pm to 7pm at Javelina Jeadquarters within the park. Packet
pickup will resume race morning at 4:30am. There will also be a short pre-race
briefing (optional) on Friday night at 5:30pm coinciding with the pasta dinner from 5:00-6:30pm.
Volunteers - If you have family or friends that are interested in volunteering
at an aid station, helping with registration, or trail sweep, have them fill out the online volunteer form on our website.
Blog/News - Our website now features blog posts and news updates. This email will be archived there for future reference
Forums - We also now have an active web forum directly on our site. In order to post you must register, which only takes a minute. You can use the forums to ask questions, plan informal training runs, connect with other runners, or talk about race strategy!
